No joke: $3.4 million to help turtles cross the road
Millions in stimulus funds going to pet projects instead of jobs
Washington, D.C.,
Jul 24, 2009 -
Why did the turtle cross the road?
Because Democrats paid it to.
It was recently announced that $3.4 million in stimulus money is going to an “underground wildlife crossing” for turtles in Florida, the latest in a series of mind-boggling and wasteful projects undertaken in the name of “stimulus” that have no real impact on long-term economic development or jobs. To see all such projects, including $1.5 million to improve sidewalks outside of a casino in Detroit, please click here.
“This is a question of priorities,” Camp said. “As more Americans lose their jobs and Michigan’s unemployment is above 15 percent, we are spending $3.4 million on a turtle tunnel? I think we can find a lot better way to spend $3.4 million than on turtles in Florida. Republicans’ stimulus alternative would have created twice as many jobs at half the cost, not thrown away much-needed millions.”
